My New Podcast

Beyond The Back Paddock

Kendall Whyte and Mick Walsh

I have the privilege of some amazing people joining me
who I have met on my travels.
Here they are now sharing their stories and wisdom with you.

The next two episodes are now available at www.beyondthebackpaddock.com.au

Mick Walsh is a leading educator, speaker and bestselling author. He is also an avid researcher of positive psychology and a former college leader. Mick implements across schools the evidence-based Learning Curve Resilient Wellbeing Program which he founded. The website www.learningcurve.com.au supports students, teachers and parents to explore how to become their best selves and is used in over 20 countries globally.

Mick is a dynamic and inclusive communicator. He is keenly sought after to coach and present in schools and at State, National and International conferences. Plus, a footy coach of mine. This is a must listen for parents wanting to create more resilient children.

Kendall Whyte, tells the story behind those Blue Trees popping up around the countryside. Kendall grew up on a farm in Mukinbudin a central wheatbelt town of Western Australia. In 2022 Kendal won the Australian of the Year for Western Australia. Kendall is also the CEO and Founder of the grassroots charity Blue Tree Project, a charity born out of loss.

The project is sparking conversations and breaking down the stigma around mental health both here in Australia and across the globe. This is as Blue Trees are now appearing in many countries. By giving dead trees a new lease on life, they are being transformed into beacons of hope for many communities.

You can also catch up on my first three episodes with:

  • Maree McPherson - a leader, mentor, business woman and author.

  • Jason Banks - the Head of Partnerships with TIACS - www.tiacs.org.au - a mental health counselling service for the blue collar community.

  • Catherine Velisha - who is paving the way for women in the food and agriculture industry.

All of the episodes are available too in Spotify

Inspiring ‘Food for Fodder’

Warren at Rural Muster in Brisbane on 31 August

R U OK Day is fast approaching, on 14 September.

SO I’m talking about this year’s theme and how it has played out in some recent conversations I have had.

This year’s theme is
‘I’m Here to Hear’.

One of the most important skills we can have, particularly when it comes to having conversations regarding someone’s mental health is the ability to listen.

Listening with genuine care and empathy, listening quietly, and giving the person your undivided attention, while remaining non-judgemental.

Also, many of us are reluctant to start these conversations in the first place as we think we need to be able to offer advice or answers for the person. But mostly, it is just being there and showing your support by listening and hearing their story is the best support you can provide.

This played out in a conversation I had last week following the Ray White Rural Muster Conference I spoke at in Brisbane. One of the attendees sought my advice during a conversation after my presentation. She shared with me the physical, financial, and mental impact the October floods had on her family in central New South Wales and particularly on herself.

This was a very emotional conversation with a strong no-fuss woman, who frequently was in tears! But I knew deep down all I really had to do was to be there and listen, let her share her story, and make sure she knew I was there to support her.

The key message is if you find yourself in this situation don’t shy away from the conversation because the most valuable thing you can do
is LISTEN.
