Have You Packed Your Mental Health Toolbox for the Festive Season?

During the festive season, feelings of joy; love; happiness; kindness; giving; peace; and connectedness are amplified.

But for many, it can also be an extremely difficult and stressful time.

This time of year can also amplify a variety of feelings. These can include sadness; isolation; loneliness; stress; anxiety; and conflict. Plus, in the current economic climate, worry about what the future holds.

There are those people who feel intense pressure to conform to the traditional festive cheer when they just don’t feel like it. There are also those with no close family ties or a robust support system. Times are hard. The skyrocketing cost of living and other economic hardships are seeing families grapple with the pressure to provide a memorable Christmas, despite tight budgets.

During the festive season it’s important to make sure you’re prepared. So be sure to have your mental health toolbox packed and ready to deal with whatever comes your way. Here’s what to include:

Set Boundaries: It's crucial to establish boundaries during this time. This might include limiting the number of events you attend, setting a budget for gifts, or even scheduling alone time for self-care amidst the festivities.

Manage Expectations: Often, have elevated expectations for the holiday season, but it’s okay if everything isn't perfect. Embrace imperfections and focus on creating meaningful moments instead.

Eat and Drink Sensibly: Drink plenty of water, particularly if it’s hot. Don’t overeat and be aware of your alcohol intake. Alcohol can exacerbate an already emotionally charged situation.

Stay Active: Physical activity is a great stress reliever. Even a short walk or some light exercise can boost your mood by releasing endorphins, the body's natural mood elevators.

Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation: Incorporate mindfulness techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga into your daily routine. These practices can help reduce stress and bring a sense of calmness.

Show Kindness: Everyone we meet is travelling a journey the other knows nothing about. Showing random acts of kindness can be contagious. It boosts energy and happiness, and assists with stress, anxiety, and depression.

Connect with Support Systems: Reach out to friends, family, or a support group if you're feeling overwhelmed. Having someone to talk to can provide perspective, comfort, and even practical advice.
