Stepping Into Vulnerability Through Storytelling
For years, I wore the mask.
On the outside, I was a farmer a bloke who got the job done, rain, hail or shine. I was strong. Stoic. Unshakable. But inside? I was crumbling. What I didn’t realise back then is that what I thought was strength: silence, avoidance, burying it deep was actually holding me back from healing.
It wasn’t until I began telling my story that I discovered the real power of vulnerability.
When we lost the farm, I lost more than just land and livestock I lost my identity. Everything I’d built my life around suddenly disappeared, and I was left standing in the middle of a paddock asking, “Who am I now?” It’s a question too many blokes in the bush have asked themselves but rarely said out loud.
Sharing that story was terrifying. What would people think? Would they see me as weak? Would they judge me?
But something incredible happened when I started speaking from the heart. People didn’t turn away they leaned in. They related. They cried. They opened up. That’s when I realised: vulnerability isn’t weakness it’s courage.
The Role of Vulnerability in Mental Health
In rural and regional communities, we’re taught to be tough. We work hard, push through, and keep our heads down. But all that pressure builds up, especially when you’re carrying the weight of drought, debt, family expectations and personal struggles. Eventually, something has to give.
Vulnerability gives us a release valve.
When we share our experiences really share them, not just the sugar coated version we give others permission to do the same. It creates a ripple effect. It opens doors. It starts conversations. And in the mental health space, conversation can be life-saving.
We often think we need to have all the answers. But sometimes, what people need most is just to hear that they’re not alone. That someone else has been where they are and made it through.
Authentic Leadership Starts With Your Story
As The Unbreakable Farmer, I’ve had the privilege of standing in front of thousands of people students, farmers, business owners, community leaders and sharing my journey. But here’s the thing: I’m not up there as some polished keynote speaker with all the buzzwords and bullet points. I’m up there as a bloke who’s lived it.
Authentic leadership isn’t about perfection. It’s about connection.
It’s about showing up with your full self the wins and the losses, the scars and the strength. It’s about leading with empathy and honesty. And when leaders embrace vulnerability, they build trust. They inspire change. They create space for others to show up fully too.
If you want to make an impact in your workplace, your school, or your community, start with your story. Not the highlight reelthe real stuff. That’s where connection happens.
Why Storytelling Matters More Than Ever
Right now, people are doing it tough. The cost of living is rising, natural disasters are becoming more frequent, and support services are stretched to the brink. In times like these, human connection becomes even more important.
Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools we have to reconnect to ourselves and each other. Whether it's in a classroom, at a council event, or in a footy club changeroom, when someone shares a raw, real story, walls come down.
I’ve seen it time and time again one person opens up, and suddenly the room shifts. People start to nod. They see themselves in the story. And in that moment, they know they’re not alone.
That’s the power of vulnerability. That’s the power of storytelling.
Let’s Start the Conversation
If my story resonated with you if you’re looking to spark meaningful conversations in your school, business, event or community let’s chat.
I offer keynote talks, workshops, and one on one consultations that bring heart, honesty, and a fair bit of humour to the important issues around mental health, resilience and authentic leadership. I tailor every session to suit the audience, whether it’s a room full of young people, farmers, or front-line professionals.
It all starts with a conversation. And sometimes, that’s all it takes to make a difference.
